Atlanta Motor Speedway
Long one of the crown jewels on the NASCAR circuit, Atlanta Motor Speedway has hosted Cup races since 1960. For much of that time, it served as the fi nal destination on the Cup schedule, closing out each season with a bang.
In 1992, the track hosted one of the greatest races in the sport’s history with the Hooters 500. Six drivers entered the final race of the season with a chance at the title but the race came down to Bill Elliott and Alan Kulwicki.
Elliott actually won the race but Kulwicki pulled off a strategic coup. He finished second but led one more lap than Elliott and secured a crucial five-point bonus that gave him the edge – and the title. Without that bonus, Elliott and Kulwicki would have tied in points and Awesome Bill from Dawsonville would have won the tiebreaker.
